SEPTEMBER 28TH:

1968 seen the Beatles start a 9 week run at number one with "Hey Jude". The McCartney song was written about John Lennon's son Julian. Paul wrote the song to help comfort Julian during the divorce of his parents. "Hey Jude" was the first single to be released from Apple Records. This was their 16th number 1 in America.

In 1980 The Police went to No.1 in the UK for only the third time with "Don't Stand Too Close To Me". This came from the album "Zebdyatta Mondatta". The song deals with a teachers taboo lust for one of his students that is reciprocated by the female student. The fact that Sting himself used to be a teacher cuts quite close to the bone for me!

DONT STAND TOO CLOSE TO ME

This was a big week for Nirvana when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" had just entered the top 20 in the US. This was also the same week that Nevermind was released which changed the way everyone listened to American Grunge Rock that would challenge the Britpop era.
